Who is the licensing body responsible for Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologists in Alberta?

In Alberta, you must be registered with the Alberta College of Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technicians/Technologists (ACCLXT).

What are the registration requirements for internationally educated Combined Laboratory and X-ray Technologists?

Applicants must:

  1. Apply to the Alberta College of Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technicians / Technologists and submit all the required documents.
  2. Be sufficiently proficient in the English language to be able to provide professional services in English.   
  3. Have obtained a diploma from a program in laboratory and x-ray sciences of at least 2 years duration approved by the Council.
  4. Write and successfully achieve the required passing score on the ACCLXT Provincial Examination. The ACCLXT Provincial Exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions and is offered three times per year. It is written at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton.

Temporary Permit:

Graduates from the NAIT CLXT program or an equivalent program who have not yet successfully passed the ACCLXT Provincial Examination, may apply for Temporary Membership.  This will extend from the date of application until the exam results are received.  Members holding a Temporary practice permit have three opportunities to challenge the exam in order to receive an Active practice permit and be placed on the General Register.

In Alberta, the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton offers a two year Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology program. The program includes 36 weeks of clinical practicum at rural hospital sites throughout Alberta.
