Who is the licensing body responsible for Dental Technologists and Dental Technicians in Alberta?

In Alberta, It is mandatory for any person working in a Dentist’s office or Dental Laboratory to be registered with the College of Dental Technologists of Alberta (CDTA) to practice within the Profession of Dental Technologists. Only registered members may call themselves Dental Technologists, Dental Technicians, or Dental Laboratory Technician Assistants. 

What are the registration and licensure requirements for internationally educated Dental Technologists and Dental Technicians?

Internationally educated applicants must:

The CDTA assesses the competency of internationally educated applicants. Prior to a satisfactory review of the application a Dental Technology Health Care Professional must complete 6 week Public Health and Safety Bridging program for foreign Health Care Professionals.

Upon completion must take a mandatory a two day Infection Control Workshop. Infection Control is a Provincial Health initiative for all 28 Health Care Professionals. It is programming that protects the Public with regard to Health Care Professionals delivery.

A one day workshop on the Standards of Practice.

If CDTA requires further information in order to be able to determine competence to practice, a candidate will be required to complete a Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR). The PLAR is a five part technical assessment consisting of: theoretical studies, complete dentures, partial dentures, crowns, bridges and orthodontics.

Conditional License

The CDTA may provide a Conditional License for Dental Technologists. This enables applicants who have met the preliminary requirements to work while completing the required assessments. The titles given while working under a Conditional License are: Courtesy Dental Technologist.
