What happens after I complete all the APEGGA requirements?

How long can it take to get the Professional Engineer licensing in Alberta?
It can take up to four years or more to obtain your Professional Engineer title. The duration of the licensing process will be different for each applicant because it depends on a combination of factors:
. your English language competency,
. how your academic credentials compare with accredited engineering programs in Canada,
. number of years of professional experience (foreign and North American).

English Language Competency
If English is not your native language, your language competency is evaluated based on your scores in the TOEFL test or based on a written sample, as requested by APEGGA. Your communication skills continue to be evaluated on an ongoing basis as part of the required experience for licensing. “Your experience must show evidence of the preparation of written technical reports and of making oral presentations to management, peers, or the public.” (APEGGA Experience Requirements for Licensure: a guideline p. 7)

Academic Credentials
If your degree is from an APEGGA accredited or approved engineering program in Canada, you meet the academic requirements. If your foreign degree is from an institution on the APEGGA screening list, then you may be required to write three confirmatory examinations in your area of practice, plus an examination in Engineering Economics, and the Professional Practice Examination.

If you are a candidate with lesser qualifications, or if you immigrated in some occupation other than engineering, then you are required to take more examinations to qualify for Professional Engineer registration.

Please note that you need to make arrangements to have your official record of courses and marks (transcripts), plus your certificate of graduation mailed by your educational institution directly to the APEGGA Director of Registration in Edmonton. Please use the APEGGA online form to request the documents and obtain the exact APEGGA mailing address for transcripts: APEGGA Request for Academic Document

Work Experience
To satisfy the experience requirement for registration as a Professional Engineer in Alberta, you must provide evidence of four years of engineering experience, including a minimum of one year equivalent North American engineering experience.

In Alberta, you can practice as an engineer without APEGGA licensing only if you are working under the supervision and control of a registered Professional Engineer. In this way, you can obtain the required minimum one year equivalent North American experience.

APEGGA has specific requirements that you need to follow during your work experience that you will be completing once you find employment:

. you are working under the supervision of a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.)
. your work experience must be documented and approved by your Professional Engineer supervisor

You can obtain the Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) title once the APEGGA Board of Examiners has evidence that you have met all APEGGA criteria in the following areas: academic requirements, English language competency, knowledge of law and ethics, professional work experience and good character.

What happens after I complete all the APEGGA requirements?
After the APEGGA Board of Examiners has determined that you meet all the APEGGA criteria, you will be registered as a Professional Engineer.
