Who is the licensing body responsible for Paramedics in Alberta?
In Alberta, only registered members of the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) may call themselves Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) or Emergency Medical Technologist - Paramedics (EMT-P).
What are the licensure requirements for internationally educated Paramedics?
An Individual Equivalency Process is required for those applicants who are graduates of a program they believe to be equivalent to an EMR, EMT, or EMT-P program not approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics. This includes individuals trained in provinces and/or territories that do not have a governing body and, out-of-country applicants.
There are three areas of practice regulated by the Alberta College of Paramedics. They are:
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR);
- Emergency Medical Technician - (EMT); and
- Emergency Medical Technologist - Paramedic (EMT-P).
Applicants are required to apply to the Alberta College of Paramedics and submit the required documents found on the ACP website under Submission Guidelines for Substantial Equivalency. Documents that are not in English must be translated. The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta provides translation services.
Examination Information
Applicants who are approved for substantial equivalency must within one year from the date of the Registration Committee approval successfully complete the Provincial Registration Examination and obtain registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics. Applications for the EMR, EMT and EMT-P Exam can be found on the ACP website. Applicants are encouraged to be aware of registration deadlines, exam fee and the turnaround time for exam results.
What are the educational requirements for Paramedics in Alberta?
(Note: Licensing bodies compare international education and experience to Canadian standards)
EMR, EMT-A and EMT-P training programs are offered by public colleges, private schools and other organizations. A current list of approved programs is posted on the Alberta College of Paramedics website.
