Who is the licensing body responsible for Respiratory Therapists in Alberta?
In Alberta, you must be registered with the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Albertato practice as a Respiratory Therapist. Only registered members may call themselves Respiratory Therapists.
What are the registration requirements for internationally educated Respiratory Therapists?
Applicants must:
- Apply to the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta and submit all the required documents. The application form, character declarations, diplomas and Academic Transcripts require notarization. As well, documents that are not in English must be translated. The Association of Translators and Interpreter of Alberta provides translation services.
- Submit an International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) assessment certificate. This must include a completed Description of Course Work application. The IQAS results must be directly submitted to the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta.
- Write and successfully achieve the required passing score on the Canadian Board for Respiratory Care (CBRC) Examinations. Applicants who have passed the National Board for Respiratory Care Exam (NBRC) in the USA are exempt as both exams are equivalent.
Temporary Permit:
In order qualify for a temporary permit applicants must
have graduated from an approved program listed on the
CoARTE Committee on Accreditation in Respiratory
Therapy Education (Canada)
or CoARC Committee on Accreditation in Respiratory
Care (United States).

The
Canadian Board for Respiratory Care, (CBRC) produces the
National Respiratory Therapy Examination. The exam is
entirely multiple choice and, all questions are based on
National Competency Profile. The profile outlines all skills and knowledge tested on
the examinations. Applicants are encouraged to be aware
of exam criteria, exam fee,
exam frequency, exam location and, the turnaround time
for exam results.

In Alberta, the following technical institutes offer three year diploma programs in Respiratory Therapy.
- Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) (in Calgary)
- Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) (in Edmonton)
