What are the duties for this trade?

Welders operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to join and cut metal components to create parts for tools, machines and equipment. Welders also repair worn metal parts by welding more metal layers.

There are several types of welding and duties vary depending on the welding type and type of metal and size of project:

. Electric Arc Welding � melting of metal using the electric current flow between the tip of the welding electrode and the metal
. Gas Welding � melting of metal using a flame from the combustion of oxy-acetylene gas mix
. Arc and Gas Welding � melting of filler materials to reinforce joints
. Resistance Welding � melting of metal without any fillers added

Welders may work indoors in a metal shop or outdoors on construction sites and oilfields.
Work at oil and gas operations requires distance travel to the work site.

What salary can I expect?

Journeyman Welders in Alberta have a general rate of $20 to $30/hour plus benefits such as: health insurance, pension contributions, paid vacation days, paid sick days, etc� Overtime pay is usually higher than the regular hourly rate, and as agreed with your employer is considered for additional work over the 40 hours of regular work each week.

Apprentice Welders during their three years of training earn more and more, getting closer to the journeyman hourly wage:
. first year of apprenticeship: 60% of the journeyman hourly rate
. second year of apprenticeship: 75% of the journeyman hourly rate
. third year of apprenticeship: 90% of the journeyman hourly rate
