Mr. Howard Robertson presented on the Calgary Board of
Education and the hiring process for teachers applying
to the CBE.
The
Calgary Board of Education is the largest public
school system in Western Canada. It includes 216
schools and employs over 8000 teaching and support
staff.
The CBE serves over 100,000 students from diverse
backgrounds including multi-cultural children, special
needs children and English as a Second Language
students.
Their teaching facilities include:
*140 Elementary Schools (up to grade 6)
*45 Junior High Schools (grades 7-9)
*20 Senior High Schools (grades 10-12)

*English proficiency � written and spoken
*Canadian Citizenship or landed immigrant status
*Alberta Teaching Certificate

*Requires the completion of a recognized teacher
preparation program (student teaching included)
*Bachelor�s degree in a subject area
*Foreign trained teachers can upgrade through the
University of Calgary
4. The Hiring Process
SCREENING INTERVIEWS
*Complete application required
*Applicants are selected for interviews based on
current need and demonstrated excellence
*Interview times are arranged by CBE staff
*Applicants may be considered throughout the year
depending on the hiring needs of schools
HIRING & PLACEMENT
*Approved applicants are notified and considered for
positions
*Schools identify staffing needs
*Selection of suitable applicants from group of
considered applicants
*Successfully screened applicants are contacted for
interviews with the school requiring a position to be
filled
*Interview is held and an applicant will be selected
