Ms. Cheryl Knight provided in-depth information on the
Petroleum industry and employment demands in Calgary and
Alberta.
The Petroleum Human
Resources Council of Canada was formed in 2001 as a
collaborative forum that addresses human resource issues
within the upstream petroleum industry. Alberta is
responsible for 79% of Canadian gas production and 65%
of Canadian oil production. With rising project
sustainability implications, the Petroleum HR Council
conducts research and analysis of the upstream industry
in Canada, including areas in Alberta. They strive to
develop programs and products that will meet industry
needs as well as to provide employers and professionals
with up-to-date information on HR and labour market
issues.
Their report The Strategic Human Resources Study of
the Upstream Petroleum Industry: The Decade Ahead
identifies:
. Workforce demographics
. Skills and competency requirements
. Occupational supply and demand
. Human resources challenges
Highlights of the report and presentation:
1. There are 4 regions of petroleum production in
Canada:
a. Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin
b. Oil Sands
c. North
d. East Coast
2. 87% of industry engineers are employed in the Western
Canadian Sedimentary Basin (most sites located in
Alberta)
3. 33% of engineers currently employed in the upstream
industry will be eligible for retirement by 2012
4. It is predicted that by 2012, the Oil Sands will
require twice the current number of engineers
5. The upstream industry employs engineers from the
mechanical, petroleum, industrial, geological,
electrical, instrumentation and chemical disciplines
6. Some occupations in demand in the next 10 years:
*Electrical Engineers
*Instrumentation Engineer/Technicians
*Stationary Engineers
*Quality Assurance Analysts
*Technical Engineers: Process, Mechanical, Chemical,
Mining, Geotechnical, Environmental
