Occupations in professions and trades that do not impact directly on the safety of the public are considered non-regulated. For non-regulated occupations there are professional and occupational associations established to develop standards of practice and education requirements for individual members who work in that occupation.

In non-regulated professions and trades it is important to understand that these associations have an advisory role without any legal power to impose restrictions on who can practice in Alberta in a non-regulated profession or trade. These associations provide networking opportunities for their members and develop specialized seminars and courses for training and upgrading.
