In general, occupations in professions and trades who have a direct impact on the safety of the public are considered government regulated professions and designated trades. If you intend to practice in a regulated profession or a designated trade -- compulsory certification class, then you must be licensed or certified by the designated provincial professional or trade association. Practicing without registration is against the law!

Some examples of regulated professions in Alberta are: doctors, veterinarians, engineers - geologists and geophysicists, physiotherapists, pharmacists and registered nurses.

READ MORE...See information about certification and registration requirements in all regulated occupations in Alberta at the Alberta Learning Information Service CERTinfo

In addition, certain trades and occupations are required to be certified by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training - see list of Trades and Occupations

If you are a foreign trained immigrant who intends to practice in a regulated trade or profession you need to know that your education credentials and work experience will be evaluated by the provincial regulatory association. Each regulatory association works under a strict set of rules and each application is reviewed by an examiner and a committee. All the people involved in assessing educational and professional credentials are practitioners in the occupation.
