There are four major areas that you need to consider when you are planning to re-start working in your trade or profession:

Evaluation of Education
Foreign degrees, diplomas or certificates need to be evaluated by the Alberta Government International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or by the individual provincial professional association for regulated occupations and designated trades. Registered nurses and psychiatric nurses are regulated occupations where the IQAS certificates are required by their Alberta association.

Assessment of Work Experience Regulated Occupations
Previous work experience needs to be assessed by the Alberta provincial regulatory association for regulated occupations or designated trades. To practice in regulated occupations there is a minimum required work experience for all applicants Canadians or immigrants. Foreign experience in the occupation is researched and evaluated by the regulatory association. People who want to practice in non-regulated occupations do not need to have their experience evaluated.

English Language Skills for the Workplace
It is important to have a very good understanding of the English language at the professional or trades level. This is necessary for you to be able to communicate in the workplace or to be able to study and write exams for any upgrading courses.

Presenting Yourself to Prospective Employers
Your success in re-starting your career depends on accomplishing all the above areas AND, in addition, on how well you present your accomplishments to an employer. Your skills, personal presentation and Canadian work experience are important factors when employers are selecting applicants.
