What value do immigrants bring to Calgary?

English language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are very important if you are planning to continue your professional or trade career in Calgary. From free of charge courses such as the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program to fee-based courses offered by public and private schools in Calgary. Prices for courses range from a few hundred of dollars to over a thousand of dollars per course. The prices vary depending on what type of funding the educational institution receives: a private school or a public educational institution (college, school or University of Calgary).

For your information, please see a list of organizations that provide general and specialized English language courses. Your choice of selecting the school will depend on your own criteria: course level, your English language needs, cost, schedule, instructors, how far you have to travel to get to classes, etc

Based on your test score you may qualify for free of charge Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC), courses sponsored by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. It is important to contact ILVARC as soon as you apply for your Social Insurance Number (SIN) because there is a waiting list for ILVARC testing in Calgary.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada sponsors the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program. This program provides English language training in a classroom setting and it is free of charge to immigrants, if your language skills are assessed to be at Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels: 1 to 4. If your language assessment at Immigrant Language and Vocational Assessment-Referral Centre (ILAVRC) indicates that you level is above CLB level 4, you may not be eligible for LINC language training that is free of charge.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Courses Offered in Calgary by Schools
Fees for English as a Second Language (ESL) courses can vary based on the duration of the course, how intensive the program is and the type of school (private or public system). In general, private language schools have higher fees and provide an intensive daily program that may last for up to three months, their students are often very young international students who come to Calgary to take a learning vacation and study English. Both private and public schools provide TOEFL preparation.

The cost of ESL courses varies and prices listed in the ILVARC directory may change, for up-to-date information please contact the school. The cost of courses also varies depending on your status: Permanent Residents of Canada (Landed-Immigrant) or Canadian Citizen. Tuition fees are higher for people who have a visitor, student or work visa. You may qualify for funding or some fee-reduction depending on eligibility criteria.

For a complete list of ESL training in Calgary with more information about courses, costs and funding eligibility for courses, please ask the school.
