What value do immigrants bring to Calgary?

The decision to continue your trade or professional career in Calgary often means taking some skills upgrading courses at educational institutions in Calgary as required by your professional association or Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

You have many options to continue your training in Calgary at University of Calgary, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), DeVry University, Bow Valley College, Mount Royal College, and several other public and private colleges.

Distance education or online learning is also available from educational institutions in Alberta and British Columbia. You can also complete high school using distance education courses while you are working.

Value of Albertas Education System for Employers
Albertas post-secondary programs and continuing education training are based on industry needs. Professional associations and business leaders in the industry are involved in the development of programs and courses offered by universities, technical institutes (NAIT and SAIT), colleges and vocational schools in Alberta. Some post-secondary educational programs have a practicum that allows students to gain real industry experience along with their academic course work.

Online courses are an alternative for adults who are committed to their career path and have very little time to attend courses in the traditional classroom environment. Increasingly, university, college and high school courses can be completed online. Online learning is becoming a standard for lifelong learning for many professionals, especially in the oil and gas industry and engineering careers. See more about Lifelong Learning

What employers think of the value of Albertas education system?
A recent survey of 2,003 employers in Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton revealed the following facts:

. 80% of interviewed employers agree that the education system in Alberta provides appropriate skills for post-secondary graduates (certificates/diploma)

. 90% of the 2,003 interviewed employers who hired recent graduates are satisfied with their skills and quality of work for all levels of graduates, form high school to university recent graduates.

. Calgary employers are more likely to seek university degree graduates when compared with employers in other regions of Alberta, who will seek more people with post-secondary certificates and high-school graduates

. Almost half of interviewed employers provide assistance for education and training to their employees. Lager employers, such as Government and educational institutions tend to provide more resources to educate and train their employees. Employers in the construction and services industries are least likely to provide resources to educate and train their employees.
