Immigrant skilled workers and immigrant business people
are an asset for Calgary. Highly educated and
experienced in their profession or trade, they provide
the energy and talent needed to fill in Albertas
looming skilled labor shortages caused by retiring by
boomers. Through the decades there are many success
stories of immigrants who built a successful career in
Calgary.
THERE ARE TWICE AS MANY IMMIGRANT SKILLED WORKERS IN
CALGARY COMPARED TO TEN YEARS AGO!
Immigrants Who Arrived in Calgary in 2002:
4,774 skilled workers immigrants in trades and
professions, representing 53% of the total immigrants
for this year
266 immigrant business people arrived in Calgary,
representing 3% of the total new immigrants

47% of new immigrants over the age of 18 had at least an
undergraduate degree: 3,005 had an undergraduate
university degree, 172 has post-graduate courses and 747
had graduate degrees (Masters and Ph.D.)
641 immigrants had non-university certificates/diplomas
315 had a formal trade certificate or diploma
Did they make the right choice to bring their skills and
experience to Calgary?
The Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada,
conducted by Statistics Canada and Citizenship and
Immigration Canada in 2000-2001 revealed that the
biggest obstacle in starting a new life in Canada is
finding employment. Of all the 114,940 interviewed
recent immigrants, 70% identified at least one problem
with the process, such as: transferability of foreign
qualifications, lack of contacts, and language
barriers.
In Calgary there is an increased effort to address these
issues and help skilled immigrants to integrate in the
new economy. In addition to general resources and
services for immigrants, Calgary has several programs
and new services developed to support skilled
immigrants, in particular.
