Chemists also haveessential roles in environmental monitoring and remediation, helping to protectthe health and safety of the public by ensuring the quality of the water, thepurity of the air, and the chemical safety of the landscape.

Forthose reasons and many more, the practice of chemistry is regulated by theProvince of Alberta through the Association of the Chemical Profession ofAlberta (ACPA). Only chemists who are registered members of the ACPA may usethe title P.Chem. (Professional Chemist) or C.I.T.(Chemist in Training) as appropriate. These titles provide immediate assuranceto government, industry and the public that specific levels of education andexperience have been met.
